Vicki Voisin, CLAS

Vicki Voisin is the creator of EthicsBasics, a unique and enormously popular program dedicated to educating law firm support staff on the subject of ethics, resulting in an increased awareness of ethics issues encountered by the staff and the improvement of their ability to handle those issues.

A practicing legal assistant for more than twenty-five years, Vicki is employed by a mid-size law firm where she is responsible for assisting the firm’s attorneys with a large number of cases that encompass a wide range of areas of the law.

Vicki is a graduate of Central Michigan University. In 1984, she achieved the Certified Legal Assistant Designation offered by the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) and, in 1992, achieved NALA’s Real Estate Specialist designation.

Vicki is an active member of Legal Assistants Association of Michigan (LAAM) and the Legal Assistants Section of the State Bar of Michigan where she currently serves as Chair Elect. She was awarded the first Vicki Voisin Award/Legal Assistant of the Year by LAAM in 2000 and, in the same year, received the Mentor’s Award from the Section. In July 2003, she received NALA’s President’s Award in recognition of her leadership in the development of the paralegal profession.

A member of NALA since 1984, Vicki has served that Association in many capacities, including Ethics Chair, Chair of the Professional Development and Education Development Committees, and as Treasurer, First Vice President and Second Vice President. She was NALA President 1998-2000 and currently serves on the NALA’s Specialty Task Force. In addition, Vicki is a member of the NALA Campus Live! Faculty where her Ethics web cast is presented to paralegals nationwide.

Vicki is a member of Lake Superior State University’s Legal Assistant Advisory Board and has served as an adjunct professor at North Central Michigan College.

Vicki has authored articles of interest to attorneys and legal assistants in publications on a state and national level, including the Michigan Bar Journal, The Michigan Legal Assistant, Legal Assistant Today, LAAM’s Newsbrief, and The Career Chronicle and Facts & Findings published by NALA. Many of those articles have been re-printed nationwide.

Vicki has made numerous presentations to the legal assistant community throughout the United States. She was a key speaker at NALA’s 2003 convention in San Antonio, Texas, where she addressed members on the topic of ethics, utilizing the EthicsBasics format. In November, 2003, she presented “Can You Hear Me Now?  Attorneys and Legal Assistants Balance Ethics and Professionalism with Technology” for the Toledo Association of Legal Assistants. This presentation was approved for Attorney CLE by the Ohio Bar Association. The EthicsBasics format will return at NALA’s 2005 Convention in Kansas City, MO where Vicki will again be a key speaker.
